Throughout my career as a medical lab scientist, I have always held patient safety a priority by handling patient specimens with the utmost care and skill, as if they come from my own family. When we were still med tech students, we were explicitly made to understand that the lab results we release impact doctor’s medical decisions and ultimately patient outcomes. I took that very seriously. Treating samples as if they come from my own family has been my mantra and has guided me for decades as I accumulated a wealth of expertise in various departments of the lab, including quality assurance and management.
My early experience as a young professional started in my hometown in the Philippines. It is hard to find work after school but as luck would have it, I got employed at my Alma mater ‘s hospital laboratory as a junior rotating medical technologist. The designation explains our work arrangements. Senior technologists became my mentors who guided me in laying the foundation of my professional experience and technical expertise. With two other junior technologists who were former classmates, I was made to “rotate” to different shifts depending on a month’s schedule - day, afternoon, and night shift – and “rotating” for three months in the departments of Chemistry, Immunology, Hematology and Blood Banking. Additionally, I was made to rotate in histopathology to work on Saturdays when the department head was off duty. As the one chosen to rotate in the department and not my other two junior colleagues, I felt singled out by our chief technologist. I felt my passion is more in microbiology but without complaints, I accepted the challenge knowing that learning more skills meant serving more patients. Additionally, years later, I found myself needing to preserve previously used proficiency blood slides for training of staff in a startup lab which I wouldn’t have been able to do had I not have experience in histopathology. Looking back, I thank my chief technologist for the rich professional experience I acquired during that time.
Night shift duties include blood drawing with STAT requests coming anytime all night. By 6 am in the morning with two med tech interns in tow, one bringing the blood drawing tray, we went to the hospital wards to draw blood from patients mostly with fasting test requests. Blood drawing was one of two chances we got to meet patients. The other time was during screening and bloodletting of donors in Blood Bank. Kids are the hardest to handle but fortunately, the parents or guardians are there to assist us in making the blood drawing experience less traumatic.
My passion in microbiology was finally realized when I came here to the US at my first job at a hospital in upstate New York. At the time, microbiology had a lot of manual tasks which needed extra time to be completed outside of work hours. For me, to treat patient samples as if they come from family needs sacrifice and to accomplish that gave me a sense of fulfillment.
My experience also includes working as a general lab supervisor and quality assurance manager in a physician’s office and a few reference laboratories. I felt it was a unique opportunity to work in these places because it made me participate in lab inspections. Additionally, I got to wear many hats and came to see the bigger picture that includes the regulatory and business side of lab testing. Meeting unique challenges in these places, not to mention gettting to deal with people outside the lab, further enriched my experiences and added to my repertoire of technical expertise. A couple of extreme challenges I conquered were taking a clinical laboratory out of technical watch and spear heading the setup of a toxicology department. Both were successful and took a lot of time and energy but were also rewarded by a deep sense of fulfillment.
In recent years, after much contemplation, I realized that it was time for me to spread my own wings and position myself in a way that will allow me to share my expertise. The thought of making a difference in the field, while fulfilling my own aspirations, filled me with excitement and determination. Finally in 2019, I launched clinical Laboratory Scientist Consulting providing technical lab consulting services to start up clinical laboratories.
I am thrilled to see where this journey will take me and the opportunities it brings. Let's continue to strive for excellence and make a difference together.
